DESMOND education programme for type 2 diabetes

DESMOND stands for Diabetes Education and Self Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed.

It is a national award-winning programme designed to help you:

  • Find out more about type 2 diabetes;
  • Meet other people and find out how they live with diabetes;
  • Deal with the changes that diabetes will bring to your life.

NHS Central Lancashire runs three DESMOND programmes:

  • DESMOND Newly Diagnosed - for people diagnosed with having type 2 diabetes for less than one year;
  • DESMOND Foundation - for people who were diagnosed with having type 2 diabetes more than one year ago;
  • DESMOND BME - for people with type 2 diabetes from the South Asian community. This is available in English, Gujarati and Urdu.

How is DESMOND Different?

  • It is a group, interactive education programme. DESMOND sessions are informal, friendly and no one will make you contribute if you don’t feel comfortable;
  • You will make the decision about whether you want to come to DESMOND and book your own place;
  • You can bring a friend or partner with you;
  • You will have an opportunity to discuss food choices, activity, medication and other subjects related to diabetes;
  • You will be able to meet and talk to other people who are in the same situation;
  • You will have your own DESMOND folder to take away and keep.

How are sessions organised?

  • You will be sent a list of dates and venues and you can then contact us to book your place.
  • DESMOND programmes are run on various days of the week from Monday to Friday. We offer a full day or two half-day options. The half days may be mornings afternoons or evenings.
  • These sessions are held at venues in Chorley, Preston, Ormskirk and Skelmersdale.
  • DESMOND is run by health professionals from the diabetes service who are trained to help you learn more about and take control of your diabetes.
