As the name suggests, you should only go to A&E or call 999 if immediate emergency care is needed.

But A&E departments tell us that around one in every four people who go to A&E don't need to - wasting vaulable and resources needed for real emergencies.

An emergency is a 'critical or life-threatening situation' and includes things like:

  • Unconsciousness
  • Losing a lot of blood
  • Difficulty in breating
  • Severe chest pain
  • Suspected broken bones
  • Suspected stroke

Your nearest A&E departments are:

Preston Road, Chorley, PR7 1PP (directions)
  • Royal Preston Hospital
Sharoe Green Lane, Preston, PR2 9HT (directions)
  • Southport and Formby Hospital (Adult A&E)
Town Lane, south Port, PR8 6PN (directions)
  • Ormksirk and District General Hospital (Children A&E)
